If you ask anyone in Salt Lake County where their favorite areas are for shopping and dining, you’ll probably get similar answers; the Marmalade District, 9th and 9th, and Sugarhouse have set themselves apart by containing a variety of small, locally owned businesses that offer great products and delicious food. Residents may like having a Costco or a Starbucks right down the street, but they ultimately choose an area to live and play in based off of how that area makes them feel. The more charming and unique, the more desirable. Tourists often look for the same types of businesses, hoping to get a taste of the “local” experience. Auto malls and retail warehouses are big sales tax generators, but they are rarely the reason anyone moves to or visits a city.
